Change of Plan: Christmas lights and procession cancelled due to weather – but lots of activities still on

Due to the weather forecast Storm BERT for Saturday 23 November, we (and many other towns) have sadly had to cancel planned Christmas activities for this weekend – at least the outdoor ones… but there will still be plenty to do in Oxted.

The forecast of heavy rain and wind, with gusts of up to 50mph, sadly means that gazebos (for the market and entertainment/music), however sturdy and well-weighted, are just too dangerous for both stallholders and general public.

The horse and carriage cannot run (and it would be a very wet ride!); our gliding fairies would also take off in high gusts of wind… and the giant snow globe and children’s ride are not safe to operate.

This is incredibly frustrating and disappointing.  And we can assure you, no-one is more disappointed than we are.

The Good News

The Christmas lights have been installed and will be on, so the town is looking festive and sparkly.
The Christmas Windows are looking amazing. Have a look around and decide which one you will vote for in the Best (Christmas) Dressed Business competition.

All our wonderful cafes, bars, restaurants and shops will be OPEN as usual with festive food, drink and gift ideas for all the family.

Indoor activities and shop/business specials are still on and include (but not limited to!):

Station Road East:
Mulled Wine, festive hot dogs and mince pies at Hammond’s
Face Painting at Robert Leech with Honey Bee 2-4.30PM
Elf on the Shelf Crafternoon at Oxted Library, plus Limpsfield Chart in History book stall and Walter & Nancy Jewellery
Mrs Claus will be reading a story, with letter to Santa and treats in the Junior Library at 3.30PM
Then Pop your letters in Santa’s Mailbox at Barnardo’s

Station Road West:
Festive hot chocolates at Cafe Papillon
10% off any purchase at “Mint in the Vault” (IG Equine, Station Road West)
20% off all Christmas Decorations at Job’s of Oxted
Glass of Bubbly for customers at Jules Boutique!
Santa’s Grotto at Morr & Co on Station Road West (by Cattle & Cocktail), 2-5pm
There’s Christmas crafts & paper chain making at Oxted Desserts & Crafts on Station Road West

Festive Street Entertainers will popping in and out of the shops and businesses to entertain customers while avoiding the rain and wind!

AND…..THE LIVING SNOW GLOBE IS ON – nothing stops this magical snow princess and she’ll be down near Paul James Jewellers / Lorimers during the afternoon, with a show every hour between 2-5pm as long as it’s safe for her to do so!

NB on 23rd November, THE ROAD WILL NOT BE CLOSED / PARKING SUSPENSIONS ARE CANCELLED

We will endeavour to reschedule the outstanding entertainment and music we had planned, so that they take place on Saturday afternoons in the run up to Christmas, depending on availability of the entertainers.

Other planned activity coming up

  • 30th November – The Oxted Band – our resident brass band will be coming to lift your spirits with some tunes – 2PM
  • 7th December – the fabulous “Sing it Out” ladies will be singing their hearts out to festive tunes from 1PM. Did you catch their Fairytale of Oxted last year? Absolutely brilliant. You’ll find them outside Boots. They’re always looking for new members too…
  • 14th December, it’s the turn of the Oxted Musical Theatre Company, who’ll be carolling their way around Oxted.
  • 21st December – we’ll be hosting a Fairytale Christmas afternoon with Character Parties with Bee.  Come along and meet Elsa, Anna and Belle, and join them for some activities and songs. Bring your little princesses in their Disney dress-up! 1-2.30PM, outside Boots.  Also The Giant Snow Globe Photo Dome will be in town…1-5pm.

Please support your local town centre businesses as much as possible and make sure you #SHOPLOCAL.

THANK YOU.
