Legislation relating to rent arrears for tenants whose businesses were required to close due to COVID

On 16th June the government announced that that legislation will be introduced addressing rent arrears for businesses forced to close due to COVID and where tenants have been unable to agree a resolution with their landlord. The legislation will introduce a system of binding arbitration between landlords and tenants. In advance of this, the government will introduce a code of practice to allow landlords and tenants time to negotiate.

Landlords of commercial properties will be unable to evict tenants for the non-payment of rent until 25 March 2022 (unless legislation is passed ahead of this) to allow time for this new process to be introduced.
