Home Bird – Oxted’s emporium of new and pre-loved interiors loveliness

If you haven’t popped in to Home Bird yet, make sure you go and have a look around this little emporium of interiors loveliness!

Home Bird is a collaboration of like-minded friends who simply have a love of all things for the home. The shop, next to the Everyman Cinema on Station Road West, is a treasure trove of lovely things for your home and garden; an eclectic and carefully chosen collection of up-cycled, vintage, new and collectables.

The business was originally launched in 2011 by Sally Potts and her sister Katie Moore, who had previously had a similar shop in Westerham called “Good Things”.

After a couple of years, Sally decided to take a break and their old friends and former Good Things collaborators, Debbie Temple, Susie Pearse and Georgie Gardner joined Katie in the shop.

“We had also been together in Good Things for a while and, all being old friends, it worked really well,” said Georgie.

The shop is set out into distinct sections, which blend together beautifully to create the overall look and feel of this lovely interiors shop. Each section has its own unique style, so there is something for everyone – whether that’s new, preloved or vintage.

The ladies are seasoned hunters of quality pieces, and acquire furniture, decorative items, mirrors, soft furnishings and china and glassware from individual private sellers, vintage fairs, trade shows and house clearances.

“When we’re are not in the shop, we are out hunting for interesting and quirky pieces for the home and garden whether antique, vintage or new,” says Georgie. “We believe that when putting a home together, it’s always nice to have a mix of old and new things. It’s what gives the home character, makes your house unique and interesting and, in adding old, up-cycled or preloved items, you are also doing your bit for the environment, reusing and re-purposing and re-loving quality pieces. So sustainability is a key feature of our business.”

Of course one of the best things about older, pre-loved furniture, that has been hand made or is “pre-flatpack era”, is that it lasts so much longer and can be re-invented over and over again and customised to suit your own taste or colour scheme. The ladies do much of the up-cycling themselves and love breathing new life into discarded pieces. They

Home Bird tries to keep its prices reasonable, so there is a fast turnover, which means their stock is constantly changing.

Some of our best selling items are our new or re-upholstered armchairs, bedside tables, mirrors, storage solutions and lamps. In the summer, garden furniture and old planters are very popular.
