Oxted’s Country Market – a hidden treasure of crafts and local produce

Did you know there is a lovely little Country Market every Friday morning in The Woodhouse Centre behind Tandridge Leisure Centre?  This wonderful weekly enterprise has been selling crafts, artisan products and locally grown, baked or laid produce in Oxted for around 50 years.

There is a network of about 150 “Country Markets” across England and Wales. They are run as co-operatives with local members and have been selling homemade baked goods, preserves, garden-grown fruit and vegetables, plants, and handmade crafts for many years.

Run by Ann Thomas, the Oxted Country Market’s stalls change weekly, so that a range of local people have the chance to showcase their creative wares.

These are a group of very talented people, such as lovely Michael, a former electrical engineer in the mines who now makes the most intricate wooden items, including bandsaw boxes and beautifully designed and crafted pens.

“Karolyn with a K” is on cakes and bakes, Mouzhan sells lovely silver jewellery, cards and seasonal flower arrangements; lovely Maria is always there with a smile and locally laid eggs (for order – 6 for £1) with smiley Pat, and lots of other super people selling delicious sausage rolls, local honey and preserves; cards, knitted and crocheted items, tea towels and aprons and jewellery.

There are a host of other crafters with beautiful knitted toys, pebble art, glass baubles as well as a stall and jam-packed shelves full of all the amazing items made at The Woodhouse Centre’s.

If you haven’t been, please go along. They’re open 9.30-11.30 (but in December, will open 10am-12pm).

Pop in, have a cup of coffee or tea and a chat, enjoy one of their fabulous bakes or just browse the stalls.

It’s a lovely way to spend a morning and you’ll come out feeling a little lighter in your heart too!
