As part of their 100th Anniversary Celebrations, the Oxted Rotary Club is running its first ever online prize-giving youth competition – a Futuristic Essay on how you, the youth of Oxted and Limpsfield would like to shape the Rotary and your community for a kinder future…
Open to all students who are at school and/or live in the Oxted & Limpsfield area, you have the chance to win a fantastic prize by writing an essay on how you would like to see the Rotary in your town evolve in the future using the strapline: Fun, Friendship and Fundraising in our Rotary Club.
So what is the Rotary?
If you don’t know anything about the Rotary, here’s a snapshot.
- The Rotary is one of the world’s largest and most successful global membership and humanitarian service organisations, with 1.4 million members in over 200 countries.
- There is a Rotary organisation in most towns, with members who strive to fundraise for local and international charities and causes. In Oxted, for example, The Oxted Rotary runs the Pram Race and lots of other local programmes, such as promoting young chefs at Oxted School.
- The Rotary consists of volunteer members from the community. It’s a sociable organsation, based on forming friendships with and outside of your community and Rotarians often get to travel all over the world in exchange programmes to see what other countries’ Rotaries are up to.
- Rotarians help each other and collectively help others. Membership of Rotary develops leadership, public speaking, social, business, personal and vocational skills as well as improving cultural awareness.
The competition – Fun, Friendship and Fundraising in our Rotary Club
All you need to do is write 500-750 words (max) on how the Rotary could best serve the people we help – members of the public in general and club members themselves – to be part of and promote a kinder future. You might consider:
- What would encourage you to join the Rotary?
- What age groups would you expect to be part of your local Rotary club?
- How would you run your Rotary club?
- When and where would you meet for friendship and how often?
- What events would you like to see run for fund raising?
- How would you help people in our community and abroad?
- How would you use developing technology?
The competition is open to students of any age attending an Oxted-based school and entrants are encouraged to explore new horizons and to seek the views of friends, parents and relatives in order to provide a wide range of responses.
Judges will consider your imaginative views and new ideas on how Oxted Rotary Club can be part of the new, modern future when selecting the winner.
Your essay should ideally consist of between 500 and 750 words, no more, and should be submitted by email to competition@oxtedrotary.org.uk giving your name, age at 1st July 23, school attended, home telephone number and a declaration of parental consent for you to enter. The closing date for entries is Thursday 31st August 2023 and if you have any queries in the meantime, please send them by email to the same address.
The winner and runner-up will be offered a fun family experience, such as a visit to a restaurant, cinema, cafe, attraction, theme park etc in the form of vouchers up to the maximum value of £100.00 for the winner and £25.00 for the runner-up.
That just leaves us to wish all Oxted & Limpsfield students the best of luck (especially to those who are awaiting their GCSE, BTEC and A’Level results this summer) and to say that we can’t wait to receive your ideas to help shape the Oxted Rotary Club for the next 100 years!
