If you’re a wine connoisseur, or just a wine lover, you’ll probably be familiar with Oxted’s independent wine merchant, The Secret Cellar, located on Station Road East next to Lorimers and Pan y Vino.
Oxted’s Secret Cellar is one of four shops, the others being in Wadhurst, Tunbridge Wells and Forest Row.
Owned by Milton Sandford Wines and run as an Employee Ownership Trust (a bit like a mini John Lewis!), all the staff are hugely knowledgable about wines and invested in the success of the business. Oxted’s branch is managed by local resident, Blair Cowl, who has worked for the businesses since 2009, managing Oxted since 2016.
It will come as no surprise that the Oxted shop is very popular, specialising in stocking interesting and unusual wines from around the world, many of which The Secret Cellar imports exclusively, in order to provide a different selection to the supermarkets.
The company tries to work with the best global wine producers they can find can find, with the aim of delivering a unique wine experience for each and every customer.
You will still find wines from the famous producers of Burgundy, Bordeaux, Rioja, California, Tuscany but TSC also has great relationships with smaller vineyards and like-minded producers, who produce wines of exceptional quality, in order to be able to offer a full range of wines and specialist spirits. These also include some exceptional sparkling wines from England and Wales, which are now internationally recognised as producers of top quality wine, regularly winning prestigious international awards.
One of their biggest selling wines and best selling Rose by miles is the £12 Rosé 2022 AC Languedoc “Preignes Le Vieux Paradis”, which is nicknamed by both staff and customers as “Oxted’s favourite rosé”, because they sell so much of it! The wines from Domaine Preignes are getting a real following amongst their customers. This stylish southern French Rosé (from an area of the Languedoc between Béziers and Agde) is made from 100% Grenache, is one of our bestsellers and is a must have at any party!
The Secret Cellar is also known for its Magnums, which they sell an awful lot of, being the perfect choice for events, weddings and parties.
They are of course coming into their annual run-up to Christmas, the busiest time of year and as luck would have it, on the very same day we are holding the 2023 Oxted Christmas Market and Small Business Saturday, The Secret Cellar will also be hosting their Christmas Tasting Day: Saturday 2nd December – 11am to 4pm (ish!)
